Carter’s Night Fantasies limelight, and Mumford’s two Elliott Carter tributes continue their rhythmic and coloristic explorations.

They are set aside still later Carter works, Tri-tribute and Intermittences, which distill the complexity of his writing without losing any of the poignancy. Copland’s Piano Fantasy by contrast takes American serialism in an entirely different direction, and are more conservative and melodic in construction.
